Towards improving the conversion rate
Inkdrop's current conversion rate after signups looks like this:
It doesn't look so bad, but the number of signups is low around 200-300, while the website is getting 5k unique visitors per month. So, the Visitor-to-Signup rate would be 4-6%. It sounds like average but it'd be great to improve this rate so that I can get more users on the current content publishing pace.
I found an interesting idea while reading Justin's blog post:
The idea is to let people try your service as quickly as possible right after visiting your website, like, with one click.
Inkdrop currently provides a demo version, which doesn't require any signups.
After clicking the "Try the Demo" button, the page shows a list of links to download the app binary for each platform. The demo version allows you to create up to 5 notes without the sync feature. It is meant to give you a taste of the look and feel of the desktop app.
It seems that some people enjoyed the demo and decided to sign up. So, this tactic works well. However, there are some room to improve the onboarding flow.
Provide the demo mode in the regular version
Currently, the demo version is separately built, so you have to download the regular version after deciding to sign up. This is annoying. It should be able to switch from the guest account to the registered account seamlessly.
Here is a screenshot:
As you can see, you can start using the app as a guest.
Migrate notes from the guest account to the user account
After signing up, you may want to continue taking notes that have been taken in the demo version. So, it should automatically migrate the notes to the user database.
Let them download it first
The website encourages you to sign up and start your free trial. But, I'd like to experiment to encourage visitors to download the app and try the demo first.
As a user, I think I feel good if I can try the app without signing up. So, changing the button from "Try the Demo" to "Download (No sign-up required)" would be nice.
I will report it back!
That's my plan to improve the conversion rate! Let me know what you think. After experimenting, I'll write a blog post about what I learned.
